Golden Skybridge Review – Is It Worth It?

The Golden Skybridge, located in Golden, British Columbia, is Canada’s highest suspension bridge. The Skybridge towers over 130 metres (426 feet) above a canyon floor, and is one of the best things to do in Golden.

I visited the Golden Skybridge on my recent trip to Lake O’Hara and Yoho National Park. I based myself in Golden and spent a few days exploring this lesser-know mountain town in BC.

Despite being afraid of heights, I love suspension bridges, especially the Lynn Canyon suspension bridge and Capilano Suspension Bridge near Vancouver. So I was excited to finally experience the Golden Skybridge, but there is so much more to do there than just the bridge!

So what is the Golden Skybridge?

I guess it should really be Skybridges since there are actually two suspension bridges here. But the park as a whole is more of an adventure park, where you can pick and choose individual activities, including ziplining, a mountain coaster, climbing wall, and Axe throwing.

What is there to do at the Golden Skybridge?

Suspension Bridge

The main attraction of the park is, of course, the suspension bridge. It spans 130 metres across and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and canyon below. While it may be intimidating for those afraid of heights, the sturdy structure and safety measures in place make it a thrilling yet safe experience.

I really enjoyed walking across the suspension bridges, even if they did make me feel dizzy! I’m proud of myself for getting across them. The views definitely help take the attention away from the fact you are so high up.

Getting across the bridge takes around ten minutes if you are enjoying the views and walking slowly (I was shuffling so probably a bit longer) We spent some time enjoying the various lookout points before making our away across the second – there is lots to see and do between the two bridges.

Canyon Trail – Forest Loop

After crossing the suspension bridge, you can continue on to the Canyon Trail – Forest Loop. This 3km loop takes you through the beautiful forest and offers more views of the canyon below. It is an easy and enjoyable walk suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Canyon Edge Challenge

The Canyon Edge Challenge is a great alternative to some of the bigger adrenaline-filled activities in the park. It’s great for kids because it’s still a bit challenging, but not too intense. The challenge involves walking on a series of elevated platforms 40 feet in the area while being securely harnessed in. There are three courses in total and one designed specifically for kids. It’s a great way to experience the height and beauty of the canyon without needing to zipline or ride a mountain coaster.

Sky Zipline

One of the most popular activities at the Golden Skybridge is the Sky Zipline, which soars 500 feet above the canyon and Columbia Valley. The zipline stretches over 1,000 feet, making it one of the longest ziplines in Western Canada. There are a total of four zipline tracks so you can race friends and family to the other side!

Railrider Mountain Coaster

Inspired by Golden, B.C.’s rich railway history, the Railrider coaster takes you on a scenic trip through the alpine landscape. The ride kicks off with a climb up the mountainside, then meanders through a dense forest along the canyon edge, eventually ending in a 73 metre (240ft) vertical drop! That sounds pretty exciting to me – it’s a great activity that’s perfect for kinds and adults.

Giant Canyon Swing

Probably the most heart-pumping attraction at the Golden Skybridge is the giant canyon swing – the only swing of its kind in this area. This giant swing ride sends you free-falling over the canyon’s edge, safely secured by a bungee cord. Once the bungee kicks in, you’ll start swinging smoothly side-to-side, soaring above the rugged terrain below – it’s kind of like bungee jumping but for people who have yet to brave it!

Axe Throwing

Fancy yourself a lumberjack? Then try your hand at axe throwing at the Golden Skybridge! Axe throwing is seriously one of the funnest activities you can do, and what better place to give it a go than in BC’s beautiful mountains? It’s a super fun activity if you’re visiting in a group with ages 16 and older!

Climbing Wall

If you’re feeling up for a challenge, try the climbing wall at the Golden Skybridge, perfect spot for anyone eager to test their climbing skills. Standing at 28 feet tall, the wall features multiple routes with varying levels of difficulty, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced climbers. Each route is designed to mimic natural rock features.

The Village

The Village at the Golden Skybridge is a great place to relax and grab a bite to eat after all the adventure activities. The Treehouse features bbq dishes, and the Canopy features Mexican. Enjoy some delicious food from one of the on-site food trucks, or sit back and take in the stunning views of the canyon while sipping on a cold beverage.

Touch The Sky Viewpoint

Just before you cross over the Lower Skybridge, you’ll see the “Touch the Sky” viewpoint, which is a very popular photo spot in the park. The viewpoint features a bench that looks out towards the Columbia Valley – it’s incredibly beautiful but does get busy.

Summer Concert Series

On the day that we visited the Golden Skybridge there was a band playing in the evening. After we’d explored the park and the suspension bridges we decided to get a beer from the bar and sit at one of the benches to enjoy some live music. The summer concert series happen every Saturday from June 22nd to August 31st between 6pm and 9pm.

Golden Night Market

Every second Saturday from July 6th to August 31st there is a night market at the Golden Skybridge where you can buy local products. If you happen to visit on the right day, you can pair a visit to the night market with the summer concert series – we happened to visit on a night where both were on and it was such a nice way to end our time in Golden.

How much does the Golden Skybridge cost?

Admission tickets to the Golden Skybridge cost approximately $52 CAD per person depending on the day you are visiting. General admission includes entry, and the bridge itself – it does not include any of the extra activities like ziplining, mountain coaster, axe throwing, or the climbing wall. When does the Golden Skybridge open?

The Golden Skybridge opens from Spring to Fall every year typically from May 3rd to October 14. It is closed during the winter months from October to April. However, it’s always best to check the official website for updated opening times before your visit.

Where is the Golden Skybridge located?

The Golden Skybridge is located in the town of Golden, British Columbia, just a short drive away from the downtown area. The drive time is approximately 7 minutes from the town of Golden. If coming from Banff the drive time is two hours. The address for the park is 503 Golden Donald Upper Rd Golden, BC V0A 1H0.

Is there parking at the Golden Skybridge?

Yes, there is plenty of free parking with designated spots for trailers and RVs.

Is the Golden Skybridge Wheelchair accessible?

Some areas of the Golden Skybridge are wheelchair accessible, but not all. For example, the Canyon Trail, Adventure Hub, Skybridge, and washrooms are accessible for motorized wheelchairs. But keep in mind, navigation might be limited due to the outdoor terrain and gravel path.

Is The Golden Skybridge Dog-Friendly?

The Golden Skybridge does not permit any pets except for service animals

Is the Golden Skybridge okay for people who have a fear of heights?

It really depends! If you have a fear of heights and do not usually like suspension bridges, then I would not recommend the Golden Skybridge. I felt very uneasy on this bridge – it is very HIGH!

It’s rare that I feel this scared on a suspension bridge, but it made me dizzy and I got vertigo. Although I was able to get across it, there was a line-up of people behind me because I was shuffling along.

You can spend as much time at the Skybridge as you like, and cross the two bridges as much as you like. I decided I was done after one loop – I’m not sure I could have walked over the bridge a second time!

Is the Golden Skybridge worth the price?

In comparison to other attractions that are similar, I would say yes it is worth it. The Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver is $72 and offers a similar experience – for example, a suspension bridge with other “nature walks” throughout the park. The Golden Skybridge is $20 less, although the Capilano Suspension Bridge does have more to do overall.

The Banff Gondola is also around the $72 mark, and doesn’t have a whole lot more to do than the Golden Skybridge (a boardwalk and some interpretive signs) However overall, the views at other attractions are more impressive.

If you really want to experience the Golden Skybridge fully, consider paying a bit extra to experience some of the more thrilling activities here – ziplining or the mountain coaster would be my choice! The Golden Skybridge is great for families, including teens, you could easily spend a day here enjoying all the very Canadian activities.

While there’s not much to do at the Golden Skybridge for the general entry price, it is comparable to other attractions and is one of the cheaper options. If you are visiting on weekends, live bands often play which is nice to sit and relax with a drink after braving the bridge!

Where To Stay In Golden

Basecamp Lodge Golden: Located on the north side of Golden, Basecamp Lodge Golden offers a blend of comfort and convenience. This charming lodge is situated by the river, providing beautiful views and easy access to the downtown area, which is just a short 2-3 minute drive away. The lodge features a variety of room types, and a coffee bar on site, making it easy to grab a warm beverage before heading out to the nearby mountains and nature trails.

Days Inn By Wyndham Golden: The Days Inn By Wyndham Golden, situated about five minutes east of the town centre, offers picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and Golden itself. The peaceful location is perfect for those who prefer a quieter setting, away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas. Each room is well-equipped, and your stay includes complimentary breakfast every morning.

Other Things to do in Golden

• Kicking Horse Mountain Resort – Enjoy world-class skiing and snowboarding during the winter months and mountain biking and hiking during the summer at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. The resort also offers breathtaking views and a gondola ride to the top for a stunning panoramic outlook.

• Yoho National Park – Yoho National Park is one of my favourites in Canada, this place blows me away every time. The park is a 40-minute drive from Golden. Definitely stop by Emerald Lake and Takakkaw Falls, or if you have more time (and a bus reservation!) check out Lake O’Hara which is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen!

• Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre – Learn more about wolves and their conservation at this educational centre. It’s an excellent opportunity to get up close and personal with these majestic animals and even go on a wolf walk.

• Whitewater Rafting on the Kicking Horse River – Experience the excitement of navigating Class III and IV rapids while enjoying the stunning scenery of the Kicking Horse River. This 5-hour Kicking Horse River whitewater rafting tour features Class I to IV rapids and is suitable for both beginners and experienced rafters.

• Visit a Craft Brewery – If there’s a craft brewery in town – I’m there! Whitetooth Brewing Co. is a local brewery that crafts small-batch Belgian-inspired beers. There tasting room has outdoor seating where you can soak in the mountain views of the Purcell Range.

• Golden Farmers’ Market – Held every Saturday during the summer months, the Golden Farmers’ Market is a great place to buy local produce, handmade crafts, and enjoy live music. It’s a wonderful way to experience the local community.

• Cedar Lake – Just a short distance from Golden, Cedar Lake offers a lovely spot for swimming, fishing, and picnicking. We spent an evening here to cool off before making our way to Yoho National Park the next day. It’s a perfect location for a relaxing day out with family.

• Visit Local Art Galleries – Golden has a thriving arts scene, with several galleries showcasing the work of local artists. Wandering the Art Gallery of Golden was a great before-dinner activity – I even picked up some vintage-style postcards for my collection!

Final Thoughts

If you are stopping in Golden as part of of a bigger Canadian Rockies road trip, I do recommend checking out the Golden Skybridge. I loved my visit here, even though it tested my fears! I think if you can plan it on a Saturday where the night market and live bands are playing, it’s a great way to spend a summer evening.
