Hi Adventure Seeker! I’m Rachael, the outdoor lover and storyteller behind A City Girl Outside.
In 2016 I left London, England and made the big spontaneous move to the Canadian wilderness that is Whistler. Coming from the big smoke it was a bit of a culture shock moving to small-town Canada (yes, Whistler is small town) It took me a while to really to connect with nature and find an appreciation for the outdoors.
My first camping trip was a disaster, I thought camping on the beach would be romantic. It wasn’t. I spent the whole time freezing my ass off and battling the strong winds, wondering which animal was going to eat me first. I was convinced the crow caw-ing at 4 in the morning had chosen me specifically as his next victim. Despite all this I survived and vowed never to bring hair straighteners on a camping trip again (yeah right!)
And that’s how A City Girl Outside came to be, because I was quite literally, a city girl outside!
After braving the outdoors for the first time in my life I ventured onto my next adventure – living at Walt Disney World for a year. It was as magical as it sounds and at the end of my year in the Happiest Place On Earth, I took a 2-week camping trip with G-Adventures through Nevada, Utah, Arizona and California. I learned how to put a tent up all by myself (go me!) and finally started to embrace the outdoors lifestyle.
I returned to Canada proud AF at my newly found outdoor skills and couldn’t wait to show them off to my (now) husband Matt. I fully embraced the winter in Canada and can officially say that I can be outside in the cold for several hours before winging like the English girl I am.
Living close to Vancouver means I can split my time between the outdoors and city life. Although I now call the beautiful Coast Mountains home, the bright lights still call to me.
A City Girl Outside represents taking the leap, discovering the unknown (to us!) doing the things you’ve always wanted to do and having fun despite the mishaps along the way. This blog aims to help readers prepare for the outdoors, solo travel, moving abroad, and to help avoid said mishaps by offering helpful guides and travel tips.
Hopefully this blog inspires you to go (or move!) somewhere new or finally brave that hike or camping trip you’ve always dreamed of!
