The guide includes the top activities to do on Bowen Island, along with useful details such as transportation options and recommended accommodations.

Where Is Bowen Island?

Bowen Island is situated in Howe Sound and just 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) away from the mainland at its closest point. Regular ferry services by BC Ferries are available from Horseshoe Bay and semi-regular water taxi rides too – so you can access this magical place with ease.

How To Get To Bowen Island

One of the things I love about Bowen Island is its close proximity to the mainland. Bowen Island is a mere 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, making it one of the best getaways from Vancouver. If you’re short on time, Bowen is also a great choice for a day trip from Vancouver.

With BC Ferries running a mere 20-minute crossing from Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove’s ferry terminal, you can choose whether to go as a foot passenger or with either bike or car in tow.

Before you embark on your journey, it’s a good idea to consult the Bowen Island ferry schedule. Ferries depart roughly once hourly but ensure you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure; otherwise, you may miss your boat and have to wait for the next departure. As times fluctuate with each season, double-check before planning your excursion.

Travelling To Bowen Island By Car

Traveling to Bowen Island is only a 20 minute journey on BC ferries via the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. Ferry departures occur every hour, and you can check out the Bowen Island ferry schedule here.

A return trip costs approximately $50 – 60 for one vehicle (less than 7 ft tall & 20ft long) with two passengers – although there is no charge when returning from your journey. All you need to do is join the queue and be ready for a smooth sail back home!

When traveling between Bowen Island and Vancouver, the ferry route does not require advanced bookings – you pay the fare at the terminal. To avoid long queues during peak summer seasons, make sure to arrive at least 30 minutes or more before departure. This way you can guarantee a spot on board so that your journey goes as smoothly as possible!

Travelling To Bowen Island Without A Car

Travelling to Bowen Island without a car? No problem! Ride the #250 Horseshoe Bay or #257 Horseshoe Bay Express buses from Downtown Vancouver and board the ferry as a foot passenger.

For those who do not intend to drive, the Cormorant Water Taxi offers both scheduled and private services from Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to Bowen Island’s Snug Cove. To learn more about their transportation options, check out their website for details!

You won’t have to worry about transportation when you arrive at Snug Cove by ferry—it’s easy enough to explore the village, beaches and trails all within walking distance of the town. Or better yet, rent some bikes or scooters for even more exciting activities around this small island.

Much of the accommodation on Bowen Island requires a vehicle to get to, especially most Air Bnbs. Keep this in mind when you book accommodation. If you are not bringing a car I would recommend staying within walking distance of Snug Cove so you can easily get to shops and restaurants and bus stops to explore the island.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Bowen Island

It’s temperate climate makes Bowen Island a great destination to visit year-round and is enjoyed by locals from Vancouver throughout the year.

During summer, the long days and sunny weather make it a perfect spot for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and beach-going. This is also the busiest season and weekends are very popular for visitors.

During the low-seasons (fall, winter, and spring), things are generally less hectic, but there are still plenty of visitors. If you don’t mind a little rain, you can find lower accommodation prices and better availability in the off-season.

I personally think Spring and Fall are the perfect time to visit Bowen Island. You’ll experience less crowds and there are still clear sunny days without the heat.
