Fairmont Empress Hotel Review – Canada’s “Castle on the Coast”

In search of the perfect destination to commemorate your next milestone or simply spoil yourself? Look no further than Hotel Fairmont Empress, Canada’s Castle on the Coast.

Everyone should add Victoria, BC to their bucket list of places to visit. While there are many lodgings one can stay in, none are as magnificent and renowned as the Fairmont Empress – a historic hotel situated in Canada’s western region.

This award-winning Victoria hotel and National Historic Site makes for a memorable getaway that expertly blends classic charm with contemporary amenities.

Every inch of this iconic Canadian landmark exudes its Châteauesque style that was crafted by the same architect responsible for BC Parliament and Vancouver Art Gallery’s designs.

Before staying at the Empress, I was fortunate enough to experience both the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

As I have previously had the pleasure of experiencing world-class service at Fairmont hotels, I chose to make my 3 days in Victoria trip extra special by arranging it around a stay at The Fairmont Empress. Read on for stunning photos of the hotel and a comprehensive hotel review, as well as some useful insider travel tips!

The Fairmont Empress is the perfect place to unwind and relax.

History Of The Fairmont Empress

Built in 1908, the Fairmont Empress has served as a prestigious destination for members of the royal family, including King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, and the Duchess of Cornwall. All have stayed there overnight at one point or another.

Nestled on the shore of Victoria’s majestic Inner Harbour, the Fairmont Empress stands regal and proud as Canada’s premier railway hotel.

The Canadian Pacific Railway constructed these grand establishments from the late 1800s to serve travellers traversing across the country. Consequently, most of Canada’s major cities are home to a railway-hotel – with Victoria showcasing its own coveted gem in The Fairmont Empress; proudly representing the westernmost point for this remarkable legacy!

For more than a century, Fairmont Empress has stood in honour of Queen Victoria overlooking the picturesque Victoria harbour. Situated in the centre of Victoria, BC, The Fairmont Empress is mere steps away from the British Columbia Parliament Buildings.

The Fairmont Empress Hotel, Lobby & Check-In

Constructed in 1908, Fairmont Empress is a luxurious hotel owned and operated by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. Recently restored with an investment of $60 million dollars.

It has been re-designed to incorporate modern decor while still preserving many original elements; such as its Edwardian structure in the reception lobby where one can find an awe-inspiring chandelier – The “Twill Flower”.

This remarkable chandelier was constructed from over 250,000 hand-cut crystals arranged in the shape of exquisite flower petals that sparkled as it catches the light. This custom piece adds a hint of contemporary elegance whilst accentuating the open entryway into this grand establishment.

I was mesmerized by how many different colours could be seen glistening off each iridescent crystal – truly an unforgettable sight to behold! If you ever find yourself visiting Victoria on your next vacation, do not miss out on this extraordinary piece of decor at The Empress Lobby.

Fairmont Empress Guest Rooms

The majestic Fairmont Empress exudes grandeur at every corner. At the Fairmont Empress you always feel welcomed and at ease in the environment. The furnishings, from linens and duvets all the way up to bathroom amenities, are extravagantly luxurious but also cozy.

Fairmont beds provide a high-end sleeping experience that I always look forward to when I stay at their hotels – you can even buy the Fairmont bed linens online so you can experience this signature comfort every night.

The recent restoration project came with details that were both elegant and understated- with a subtle pop of colour.

While my room did not come with a bathtub I was more than pleased since its shower was roomy and had good water pressure. If having a tub is essential to you, all you need to do is contact their reservations team for one.

Although small, the bathroom was captivating and quaint. In accordance with the rest of the space, it is fully stocked and primed for use and every detail has been attended to. Ours featured a rain fall shower surrounded by glass walls as well as an illuminated vanity mirror.

Indulge in the selection of Rose 31’s cruelty-free bath products at Fairmont Empress – boasting a range of aromatic and alluring scents such as floral, woodsy notes. Enjoy an array of luxe amenities including shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body lotion plus soaps to complete your stay.

I was impressed by the Fairmont Empress’ commitment to sustainability. Instead of single-use plastics, they have provided their guests with reusable full size bottles – aligning perfectly with the Fairmont Green Partnership Program.

Dining At The Fairmont Empress

Lobby Lounge & Veranda

One of my favourite dining options in The Empress is the Lobby Lounge. Not only does it serve afternoon tea but has a swanky bar too – complete with nightly piano performances by featured artists in attendance. I didn’t have time this trip to indulge in the afternoon tea extravaganza, but I’ll definitely pencil that into our plans next time around at The Fairmont Empress.

Nestled just beyond the Lobby Lounge rests the remarkable Veranda, which is widely regarded as one of the finest patios in Victoria for appreciating a thirst-quenching cocktail while taking in breathtaking views of the Inner Harbour. On a warm sunny day, there are few experiences more blissful than savouring these delectable delights.

Reservations are not accepted for the Veranda so you should plan to arrive early. It’s incredibly sought after and can fill up quickly. I’m warning you now so that you don’t miss out on an unforgettable experience! Plus, even when the weather starts cooling down outside, there are outdoor heaters that’ll keep everyone feeling nice and warm throughout dinner.

Q At The Empress – Restaurant & Bar

On the other side of the Veranda, lies Q Bar and Empress’ exclusive restaurant – Q.

Grand portraits of Queen Victoria decorate the walls while observing customers, which give this space a unique twist between contemporary ambience and Edwardian vibes. Q restaurant is full of intriguing elements everywhere!

The Fairmont Empress never ceases to amaze me with its remarkable hospitality. As soon as we were sat, we were greeted with popcorn seasoned in Q Bar’s signature charcoal flavour. This specific snack has earned a lot of attention; trust me when I say that you can’t miss out on trying it. We ordered their extraordinary charcuterie board that was nothing short of heavenly.

Meanwhile, I can’t help but be drawn towards the expansive white quartzite bar adorned with bottles of the delightfully vibrant Empress 1908 Gin – interestingly named after the hotel itself!

Experience the exquisite taste of Empress 1908 Gin for yourself by ordering one of the many signature cocktails – perfect for soothing melodies well into the night before heading back upstairs full of joy.

The cocktail menu is a colourful array of concoctions. Although the cocktail I ordered was unavailable the bar was more than happy to accommodate any drink requests.

Before you retreat to your room for the night, I highly recommend that you try a few items from Q’s delectable menu. The Crispy Chicken Sliders are particularly scrumptious. Or if burgers is your preference, the 8 oz Angus Cheeseburger with roasted onion mayo and aged white cheddar on brioche bun can’t be missed either!

But don’t just take my word for it; head over to Q on your next visit to Victoria and find out what everyone else has been raving about.

Pool & Spa Amenities

If you’re looking to take a dip, the pool is perfect for laps and lounging, this sleekly designed area is worth visiting if ever you have the chance to stay at Fairmont Empress. The whirlpool and children’s wading area offers more shallow options.

Don’t forget about the hotels two saunas and excellent Fitness Centre filled with treadmills, stair climber, elliptical trainer and free weights!

To finish off your wellness retreat, make sure to stop by the Willow Stream Spa at Fairmont Empress. While you don’t have to stay at the hotel in order to experience one of their signature treatments, it’s definitely worth a visit!

Is The Fairmont Empress Haunted?

As an avid lover of ghost stories, naturally the first thing I researched was if Fairmont Empress Hotel is haunted. It turns out that some people swear by it!

Rumour has it that the ghost of Francis Rattenbury (the architect behind its construction in 1908) as well as a cleaning maid have been spotted on the 6th floor. What’s more fascinating is this hotel carries so much interesting history with itself along with potential paranormal activity – spooky!
