Can You Wear Hiking Boots Every Day? Pros & Cons

Wondering if you can wear hiking boots every day?

The short answer is yes – you can wear hiking boots every day! However there are some cons, as well as pros, to wearing hiking boots every day. This post will highlight both so that you can decide if you want to wear your hiking boots for every day use.

I have a few pairs of hiking boots, some I reserve purely for hiking, but others I have worn occasionally for every day activities as well.

Some hiking boots look great with every day outfits, so it’s understandable to see why you would want to wear hiking boots for every day wear, especially since they can be expensive.

While it’s true that you can wear them every day, there are a few things to consider before making this decision.

Keep reading to see what the pros and cons of wearing hiking boots every day are.

Is it okay to wear hiking boots on a daily basis?

Hiking boots are designed with comfort and durability in mind for when you’re out on the trails. And since they offer lots of support it can be tempting to wear them on a daily basis.

However doing so does mean they will wear down more quickly, especially on sidewalks. I try to avoid walking on pavement as much as possible to preserve the tread on my hiking boots.

If I wear my hiking boots for non-hike activities, it’s usually because they have waterproof properties (in winter for example) or because I’ll be hiking short trails throughout the day (so I keep them on all day just for ease)

A good pair of hiking boots can be expensive, so you not want to wear them on the daily. But there is a vast variety of hiking boots out there, some brands can be very expensive while others are more affordable.

So while you can definitely wear hiking boots every day, these are just some of the things to think about.

If you’re considering daily wear for your hiking boots, below is a list of pros and cons to help you make a decision.

Pros of Wearing Hiking Boots Every Day

First let’s talk about the benefits of wearing hiking boots every day.

They Are Super Comfortable!

Hiking boots tend to mold to your feet after a few wears , which makes them very comfortable. It’s hard to find other types of shoes that offer the same level of comfort as hiking boots do.

Multi-Use

Depending on the design, some hiking boots can look good with casual outfits. This means you can wear them for every day activities like running errands, going shopping, or even to work!

Can be worn in most climates/weather

Most hiking boots have water resistant properties, which makes them perfect for wet and muddy trails. But it also means you can wear them on rainy days or in snow without worrying about getting your feet wet.

Good Traction

Another reason hiking boots can be worn year-round is they offer great traction in comparison to the standard shoe/boot. I have worn my hiking boots in winter for this reason (I have slipped over on ice way too many times!)

Offers good ankle support

Hiking boots are designed to provide excellent ankle support. This can be beneficial for people with weak ankles or those who suffer from joint pain.

You’re always ready for a hike!

As mentioned previously, I have worn hiking boots all day when on vacation because I had a few shorter hikes planned. This was way more convenient for me than changing every time we started a trail. Plus they went really well with my outfit so I never felt the need to change them!

Less shoes in your closet!

Many hiking boots and shoes are designed for multi-use activities, which means one less pair of shoes in your closet! (I love hiking boots so I have 3 or pairs currently taking up room in my closet – oops!)

Cons of Wearing Hiking Boots Every Day

While there are some pros to wearing hiking boots every day, there are also some downfalls. I personally think the cons out way the pros, especially if they are on the expensive side.

Expensive

If you are an avid hiker, a good pair of hiking boots on the trails makes all the difference. For this reason it’s important to look after your hiking boots and not wear them out too quickly by wearing them every day.

I spend anywhere between $190 and $250 for my hiking boots cannot easily replace them at this cost. Therefore I limit use outside of hiking.

The occasional non-hiking use will not make a huge difference but regular wear will mean replacing them much more quickly.

Faster Wear and Tear

Hiking boots are made to withstand tough terrain, but using them on pavement or other hard surfaces can cause them to wear out faster, especially the soles that are specifically designed for grip.

This means that if you then do decide to hike a trail with uneven terrain you may find if more difficult or uncomfortable as a result.

Limited Style Options

While some hiking boots can look great with casual outfits, they may not necessarily go with everything in your wardrobe. This could limit your outfit choices, especially for dressier events.

Would I wear my Columbia Newton Ridge boots casually? Sure! But my Salomon X Ultras? Maybe not. (Interestingly, the Salomon’s are the better hiking boot!)

Hiking boots are heavy

Another downfall to wearing hiking boots on a daily basis is that they tend to be heavier than regular shoes.

This can make them less comfortable for long periods of time if you’re just walking around or standing, especially if you have a job where you are on your feet all day.

Not good for other activities

Hiking boots are built specifically with hiking in mind. So while they can be worn every day they might not perform as well for other activities such as working out, running, or active sports.

As hiking boots are generally heavier, they don’t work well with other activities and you may need to purchase additional shoes for their specific purpose.

May be uncomfortable in warmer climates

Hiking boots are typically designed with insulation to keep feet warm in cold weather. This can make them too hot and uncomfortable to wear in warmer climates.

Many hiking boots lack the breathability that trail runners or running shoes have – therefore they may cause you to sweat more which can be uncomfortable.
